The shirt that started a fire.
My take on the Werner Herzog quote, but with a different angle. I love the quote, but my interpretation is slightly different. We shouldn’t pretend we don’t see the unpleasant, uncomfortable truths around us. We shouldn’t watch evil unfold. Speak up. Call bullshit. It’s tempting to avert our eyes and feel helpless in the face of a modern, complex, divided world. Don’t do that. We all see the suffering, the corruption, the lack of decorum.Give voice to that place deep in your soul that draws a line, that won’t acquiesce.
I originally made this graphic for an simple post questioning why all my freedom-loving, patriotic friends were suddenly just fine watching folks get murdered on our streets. I got lots of interest. Everyone wanted the shirt I was wearing in the post. But it wasn’t even a shirt yet, just a graphic I built using a photo of me standing next to my printing press. But then a very good friend of mine—who had been the most outspoken fan begging for a shirt—celebrated her 80th Birthday. Susan’s been a fighter, an outspoken protester, a revolutionary her whole life. So I thought it would be cool to print some of these Ts and surprise her. Naturally I made a few extras for all the other folks who had come asking.
The shirt’s great. Softy 100% cotton knitted by the great people at AS Colour. I mixed a nice, dark, warm grey and we screened it one Thursday afternoon when the shop was so hot from the July sun that everyone was sweating and cracking soda waters one after another. At $22 it’s a steal for a awesome dang T-shirt in the year 2026. Enjoy! (And go start a fire! Words only, no flames. Words are more eternal anyway.)
